September 22, 1863
In this letter, dated September 22nd
1863, Charley is writing to F. W. Gunn about letters of recommendation that he
has just received from Mr. Gunn. These
letters of recommendation will go a long way in helping him receive a
commission as an officer in a Black Regiment.
However, an acting officer, an unknown colonel, does not wish for any of
his men to seek this kind of promotion.
His reasoning is unknown, and Charley thinks it contemptible. He talks briefly of the happenings of Mr.
Gunn’s life, as he hears from George Lyman, and also mentions that Romulus is
happy with his new situation, that being his own promotion into a Black
Regiment, specifically the 3rd Pennsylvania U.S.C.I. Charley mentions that he, and others in his
regiment, have been studying for the exam, however finding time is difficult
with all the drilling and other duties.
He also mentions having seen another Colored Regiment, which is camped
somewhere in Alexandria.
