September 19, 1862
This is a fairly simple and jovial letter written to Dan Gunn the day following the arrival of the 19th Connecticut into Alexandria. The 19th Connecticut was an entirely Litchfield county regiment, and many people from Washington were within its ranks. In general, the letter talks about the soldiers and friends that Charley met upon his arrival at the camp of the 19th. These included Romulus Loveridge, Sheldon Clark, and other members of The Gunnery school. The letter helps to illustrate the many people that Charles counted as his friends, and the companionship felt within the military. The letter also illustrates the humor of Charles, such as in his description of a Williams from his own regiment. The letter ends with a quick explanation of where Charles was, Fort Scott, and also to congratulate Dan on a win in baseball. It further concludes with a hope to hear from Dan again.
