George R. Lyman
George Lyman was the son of son of a minister at the “now enlarged and glorified Little White Church on the Green,” and a student of Mr. Gunn. When he was seven, he moved to the town with his father, and quickly matriculated into Miss. Brinsmade’s Seminary for Young Ladies as the only male student. After a short time there, he went to the local district school for a short time before becoming one of Mr. Gunn’s students.
As a student, he was deeply touched by the teaching style and philosophy of Frederick Gunn. Later in life, at the “Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Frederick Gunn,” he spoke as a member of the Gunnery Alumni Association and spoke very kindly of the deceased headmaster. He said of Gunn, “He was father, mother, elder brother, teacher, disciplinarian, counselor, companion, and friend, and anything else you may wish to add, all in one.” He made special note of Mr. Gunn’s connection to nature, and seemed to especially enjoy the camping.
After his time in The Gunnery, George and his brother moved to Minneapolis, and in the 1870’s opened up a lucrative pharmacy.
