Gilbert Goodyear
Gilbert Goodyear is
the older brother of Charles Goodyear. Little is known about the man,
except what we find in the Goodyear genealogy, and some records from the Civil
War. The exact relationship between Charles and Gilbert is rather
unknown; they were about 10 years apart in age and Gilbert likely had little to
do with Charles growing up. However, as they grew older, I think it can
be said that their relationship grew stronger since Charles writes fondly of
Gilbert and his family in the letters we have.
Gilbert was born in 1832. He served a short stint in the 3rd Connecticut Volunteers, a three-month regiment, in Company B. Afterwards he joined the 15th Connecticut Infantry as a Sergeant in Company A. One record seems to indicate that he left as a private, but it is hard to say if this is exactly accurate. After the War, he continued with a career in the military; he was a member of the Connecticut National Guard.
