Fort Richardson
Modern Day Historical Marker
Fort Richardson, like Fort Scott, was another of the many forts that were built in defense of Washington D. C. during the early days of the civil war. Also, like Fort Scott, it was a part of the defense of the left flank of D. C. Another commonality between the two forts is that both were home to the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, explaining why Charley Goodyear was on guard duty at Fort Richardson even though he was stationed at Fort Scott.
Fort Richardson was named after General Israel B. Richardson and was built in the September of 1861. Its perimeter was 316 yards, and it also had the carrying ability to hold fifteen guns.
