The structure of the Civil War
armies can be very confusing if one does not know what all the terms mean and
what their relationship to each other is exactly. Charley uses military
"jargon" throughout the letters, and I'm sure Mr. Gunn and his family
understood all of the terms. Today, however, many of the terms have
changed meanings since the Civil War or have gone out of use. In an
attempt to hopefully alleviate any confusion, this page links to a very useful
website that briefly and clearly explains the structure of the Army during the
Civil War. The website, written by Dave Frederick, goes into the
structure of the Army (mentioning such terms as “regiment” and “company”) and also the structure of command
(mentioning such terms as “corporal” and “sergeant”). Please use the link
below to hopefully clear any confusion of the terms.
